Loves,

Was I ever surprised when I received an email from the City of Mission, my hometown, stating that I (and my amazing wife) had been nominated for a Community Service Award! “The award is presented to an individual for outstanding volunteerism in the fields of arts and culture”.

In The Beginning

Years ago, I participated in The Human Library Organization in Vancouver.

“The Human Library is a learning platform that has hosted personal conversations designed to challenge stigma and stereotypes and creates a safe space for dialogue where topics are discussed openly between our human books and their readers.”

Isn’t that an incredible concept?

I volunteered as a “human book” and shared my story – one I have now written into a memoir. It was a great place to practice vulnerability, bravery, and confidence in my storytelling skills. I was met with such love and connection, and was profoundly moved by how many people related to my story, and had their own similar story to share.

Hosting The Living Library

Last year I had a discussion with the manager and coordinator of Arts and Culture about hosting a similar event. Then I chatted with my local librarian. Voila, an idea was born. With encouragement and support, we created the Living Library.

My wife and I searched our community for human books, people willing to share personal stories from different backgrounds and perspectives, for our event. Ten people committed to volunteering! Such brave and enthusiastic souls. Their stories were vast and fascinating – Christian parents with gay children, autism and alcoholism, intimate partner violence, immigration, and accidents and addiction.

There was so much expressed and so much learned. We built community that day! The Living Library was a grand success and this year we’ll be under the banner of The Human Library Organization.

Community Service Award

I’m so honored to receive a Community Service award. Volunteering is such a gift – to others and to yourself. It truly takes a village to make an event happen. I’m grateful to the City of Mission, the Fraser Valley Regional Library and librarians, the “human books” and all the people of Mission who showed up to the event.

And a special thank you to my wife, the BEST partner ever.
