Hello Loves,
The quickening of spring has opened the floodgates to creativity.
My friend was a resident writer in April at The Historic Joy Kogawa House in Vancouver where she hosted an event on Transforming Trauma Thru Words and Music. Guest musician and writers were – Jerry Moon, Jonathan Poh, and Wiley Wei-Chiun Ho – who played a self-composed musical soundtrack and read from their published stories.
Then I went to an amazing book launch at Chinatown Storytelling Centre with authors Kevin Chong and his book The Double life of Benson Yu, Lindsay Wong and her book Tell Me Pleasant Things About Immortality, and guest Christine Lai with her book Landscapes. Writing is in the air and these novels sound like incredible reads.
I attended a queer artist’s salon where stories were shared, Chinese Opera and Celtic songs were sung, and poetry was read. Did I mention creativity is in the air?
I’m steadily moving forward with writing my second memoir. I’ve created a timeline and mapped the outline with index cards on the wall above my desk. And I’ve carved out time every morning for writing when my mind is clear and alert. Momentum is key. I’m excited! And engaged. And look forward to how this book will enfold.
In April I taught a month-long writing workshop that I created called – Write From Your Heart: From Victim to Victor/From Wounded to Warrior – at my local women’s shelter. Our circle met once a week, and as we sat around the table drinking tea and eating snacks, we shared our stories of trauma to healing from our experiences in the past. The understanding that we were not alone with this pain and fear, and that others were by our side, felt like an immense moment of sisterhood.
Today I’m off on a hike to catch the sun before the spring rain.
Cheers to creating a beautiful month ahead.
